DESIGN STUDIO 2

PROJECT 1

FAMOUS PEOPLE, FAMILIAR FACES

DIAGRAMMATIC ABSTRACTION

TASK:
In a group of 5,we were to produce a complete set of architectural drawing of the selected project (private residence) on A3 size tracing paper.

We were required to investigate and formulate our findings into a set of 5 models(6x6x6 cm). The models had to be precise and informative to express the analysis of the ideas hidden in the project assigned.Using no more than three colours, the models had to be well crafted and beautifully made to rest on a A3 MDF board.

Our given architect was,Mario Botta.

REFLECTION
The learning outcomes intended for this project were:

  1. Ability to identify famous architects and their works
  2. Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.
  3. Ability to Diagram and analyse architectural work of selected architect
After completing this task,I learnt more about the history and principles that follow great architecture. The project enabled me to appreciate the works of renowned architects and the processes they go through to produce such amazing designs. My understanding of basic architectural components and elements grew more as I progressed into the project.

PROJECT 2
BAYWATCH/BIRDWATCHING TOWER

Task:
In groups of two, you are to begin with a volume in the form of a solid cube 3 x 3 x 3 meter. By selecting a beach/water sport activity, you are to design a life guard post for the purpose of monitoring/guarding. It shall include the activities of observing, resting, eating etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with the spatial planning. This structure should correspond to the site that you have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.
Or design a birdwatching tower for visitors who hike throught the forest route.

Following our site visit to Pantai Kerachut beach in Penang,we prepared a Site Analysis as a class in order to design our watch towers.
The analysis report is available under "STUDIO 2 PROJECTS" post.

Reflections

The learning outcomes intended were:

The aim of this project was to generate form and space through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on exploring the user requirement and simple spatial organization skills and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

Completing this task enabled me to understand how to design within a given site context. The user and context requirements allowed me to understand the needs and facilities required by the user.Working with a partner, made me learn more about her opinions and judgements about our design. We worked together as a team,to produce the best that we could.

FINAL PROJECT:
Task:Pantai Kerachut Retreat House

As a continuation from project 2,we were assigned to design a retreat house for either a cost guard or forest ranger, depending on the site we chose.
The retreat house had to have a resting, cooking, storing and sanitary space.

Reflections:
The learning outcomes intended were:
To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process  in architectural design
•  To introduce students’ to the understanding of user specific design requirements
•  To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design
•  To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis

The final project allowed me to demonstrate my skills acquired thoughout the semester. It further allowed em to explore specific designer requirements and to understand the notions of space and form.I learnt that to produce a good design,i had to go through vigourous design processes.
