BUILDING CONSTRUCTION 2
PROJECT 1
Understanding Forces in Skeletal Structure
TASK
Construct model of a tower according to the following specifications.
• Materials for model: Popsicle stick, toothpick, thread, pins and a base (A5 size)
• NO GLUE or any adhesive material allowed.
• Height of the tower model should BE MORE THAN 30 CM, measured from the base and the top. The
top of the tower should be able to support a flat cardboard to place the load.
• Popsicle sticks used MUST NOT EXCEED MORE THAN 100 PIECES. Toothpick can be used as a
connector/part of the structure but not as the main structure.
• The completed model will be tested from the minimal load (1.25kg) up to maximum load that it could
withstand up to 2 minutes applied at the top of the tower structure.
• Tower SHOULD NOT BE OVERLY DESIGN and must conform to the design criteria.
• Analysis on the success or failure of the tower together with the justifying measures in the case of
failure is to be provided in the form of an A3 bound report.
• Students are encouraged to use annotated sketches / diagrams to explain the forces, structural
movement experienced during the testing of the tower.
• Photographs of the tower should also be incorporated into the presentation board(time lapse from
model testing as well the overall look of the tower)
REFLECTIONS
Completing the tower helped me apply construction system in design and to
recognize the implication of construction systems in design.
I have now gotten a better understanding of the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural
systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Project 2: Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure
Individual Task
Individually,we had to do a 2D detail drawing (isometric, section) to show different
parts of the selected buildings complete with annotations and specifications to show understanding on
how the building is constructed.
The drawings were to be formatted in A4 size sheet complete with title block. Use appropriate scale for
the detailing.
GROUP
1. You are to propose a building (solid construction or surface construction) and identify the different
types of structural systems used in the construction of the building of your choice. You are to ensure
that the building you select is using at least TWO (2) different types of structural system.
2. Describe each structural system identified in terms of Function, Material and Load distribution.
3. Produce a model showing the different structural systems used in the above building. Suitable scale
and material to be used for the construction of the model shall depend entirely on you. However, do
take note that quality and workmanship of the model produced will be considered in the assessment of
this project.
4. You are then to prepare ONE (1) A4 size booklet to analyse the success or failure of the model together
with the mitigating measures. You are to include a brief introduction of the building, construction
method, modelling process as well as detailing of different parts of the buildings to show how it is
constructed.
5. Students are encouraged to use annotated sketches / diagrams to explain the forces, structural
movement experienced.
6. Photographs of the model and the process in making the model should also be incorporated into the A4
booklet.
REFLECTIONS
After completing the task,I learnt about the forces applied in structures.
• I could now make identifications of basic structural systems in construction
• Compare solid and surface construction systems.
• Differentiate solid and surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural
elements.
• Recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design.
• Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural
systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.
