STUDIO 3

PROJECT 1:
Journey for the 5 senses

GROUP TASK

Project 1 consists of 2 main tasks as described below:

1a          PRECEDENT STUDIES: Analysing spatial poetics & spatial typologies in architecture

As part of this, the objective of Project 1a is to identify and analyze spatial order and spatial poetics through precedent studies. The main aim is to analyse 2 selected architectural precedents. Each group of students is to analyse the spatial poetics & spatial typology of the selected precedents. The analysis of the design approaches will inform the preceding design projects for the remaining semester. Thus, the selection of precedents should be critical and inspirational.

Tasks
In groups of 4-5 students, select 2 precedents for analysis. It could be local, national and/or international examples. One precedent must be PRE-MODERN MOVEMENT, and one precedent must be CONTEMPORARY. Also, one precedent must be LINEAR, and the other CONCENTRIC. Record your analysis on multiple sheets of A3 butter paper. The precedent study should provide the following analysis:

SPATIAL TYPOLOGIES
  1. State and describe the spatial typologies applied in the design
  2. Explain how the spaces are organised and ordered
  3. Explain how the typologies ordered the use of the design

SPATIAL POETICS
  1. What is the design considerations employed to explore spatial poetry/poetics/experiences?
  2. How are the spaces articulated in terms of the poetics, sensuality and tactility of architectural spaces?
·         Flow of experience (identify key circulation/journey).
·         Using at least 5 images/perspective that illustrate poetics of space, analyse how the experiential space is created: Engagement with senses; Manipulation of light and its effects on space (natural & artificial); Texture and materiality; Scale and proportion of spaces etc
       3,      Plan-Section relationship
·         Co-relate the plan to one of the most interesting section of your selected building. Study the section and analyse how it is designed. Comment on the relationship between inside/outside, volumes and scale of space, variation and hierarchy of spaces.
1b        The Journey for the 5 senses

Using the design strategies based on the Project 1a, design a walk themed ‘journey for the five senses’.

Tasks
1.        Read the given poetry and visualise it from an architectural viewpoint.
2.        Translate the poetry into a walk by using 2 contrasting spatial typologies. Guidelines are below:

3.        Via white card or digital modelling, produce study models for each spatial typology.

4.        Based on the sketch design, develop plans and sections (at an appropriate scale depending on your design scheme) with considerations of human scale, light/shadow, materials/texture. Section is to be drawn using pencil on butter paper.

MODELS

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.              Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience
2.              Identify and analyze case studies to inform the design project
3.              Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space
4.              Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
5.              Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.

REFLECTIONS:
After completing this task,I finally understood how to use spatial typology in my works.I learnt that space has to be felt and experienced to design with meaning.I managed to grasp the idea of design with proper consideration of section plan relationships as well as generate ideas using case studies and experential conditions.

I also managed to improve my autocad work as well as 3d modelling using various softwares.

Project 2
INDIVIDUAL

GENIUS LOCI: Site Analysis & Concept Development

  • Produce site analysis which document, interpret and analyze the site context and the ‘genius loci’ of place or site,(PASIR PANJANG LABRADOR PARK, SINGAPORE)
  •

REFLECTIONS
The second project for the module calls for a design of a design concept developed as a response to a given site. This project consists of 2 parts:

Assignment 2a
DISCOVERING THE SITE & ITS GENIUS LOCI
The main aim of Project 2a is to identify and analyze the site context for design exploration. After a visit to the site we had  to carry out a thorough research and site analysis. In this process,I learnt to pay careful attention to my surrounding areas and to the environment.I learnt to apply my knowledge from other subjects such as building science,to be able to pick out important aspects of the environment to be able to design my upcoming Visitor Interpretive Centre.

Assignment 2b
SITE RESPONSE AND DESIGN CONCEPT
The main aim of Project 2b is to develop a strong, individual design concept grounded in a personal site response derived from the information gathered in groups via Assignment 2a.
The site visit enabled me to gather information of the site context as well as to experience the war site and its effects.I managed to begin designing my VIC based on a concept that i came up with. The design concept helped me add personal effects to my design in order to make the user aware of the feelings that i wanted to convey.

Project 3
GENIUS LOCI: VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE (VIC)

INDIVIDUAL

TASK:
Project 1 introduced and explored the formal and poetic articulation of architecture in a site-less condition. Project 2 established a Design Concept as a driver for architectural development. In Project 3, the design brief calls for an architectural response to design AN INTERPRETIVE CENTRE emphasising a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences and programmatic requirements.

MODEL

Learning outcomes:
1.       Generate design based on the unique character and conditions of the site context
2.     Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materials/texture
3.       Design a small scale community building which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and users’ experiences

4.       Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.

REFLECTIONS
Completing this task enabled me to strengthen my understanding of spatial poetics.I managed to add emotion and feelings from the war into my VIC.I was also able to provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site as well as provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information. The Vic has been a very interesting piece of architecture to design,as it makes one aware of the past, its effects, and post effects. It  has helped to me further enhance my ability to design based on emotions and moods.
